Concerns Mount Over Safety of Passengers as Aging TNSTC Buses Show Signs of Neglect in Tiruchi

Tiruchi, April 26: The poor condition of buses operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transportation Corporation (TNSTC) in Tiruchi has become a cause for alarm, particularly in light of recent safety incidents.

A conductor's fall from a moving bus, accompanied by a dislodged seat, has raised serious questions about the maintenance standards of TNSTC vehicles in the city.

The incident occurred on McDonalds Road when a bus traveling between Srirangam and K.K. Nagar took a sharp turn, causing the conductor to tumble onto the road along with the damaged seat.

Following this alarming event, an investigation has been initiated against three officials, including a Manager from the Dheeran Nagar bus depot, for their alleged negligence in ensuring the safety of passengers through proper maintenance practices.

Reports indicate a widespread issue of deteriorating bus conditions, with many vehicles showing signs of extensive wear and tear. Torn and damaged seats, rusted window rails, cracked roofs, and damaged floors are common sights, particularly among suburban buses.

Such visible signs of decay not only compromise passenger comfort but also pose significant safety hazards, especially for vulnerable groups like senior citizens and children.

Despite guidelines stipulating the retirement of buses that exceed certain age and mileage thresholds, TNSTC Tiruchi continues to operate a fleet comprising predominantly aging vehicles.

Out of approximately 280 buses serving city and suburban routes in Tiruchi, only a small fraction are considered modern, leaving the vast majority well beyond their recommended operational lifespan.

Passenger concerns have been echoed by residents like S. Dakshinamoorthy, who emphasizes the urgent need for proper maintenance protocols to be implemented. With a significant portion of the bus fleet showing signs of extensive wear, the safety of passengers must take precedence.

While TNSTC officials claim to conduct regular maintenance checks and address reported issues promptly, the pervasive state of disrepair suggests systemic challenges that require immediate attention.

While minor repairs may provide temporary relief, a comprehensive approach to fleet renewal and maintenance is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers relying on TNSTC services in Tiruchi.
